(Due to the high demand of the first tasting, we have decided to put on an extra tasting for those who missed out.)
***Unfortunately, with Typhoon Hato being hoisted to T10, we will, unfortunately, need to postpone tonight’s South African Wine Tasting until Thursday, 14th of September.***
South Africa is arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is a multi ethnic society, encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions, showing the diversity of this wonderful place.
The establishment by the Dutch East India Company of a refreshment station at the Cape in 1652 had one single aim: to provide fresh food to the company’s merchant fleet on their voyages to India and surrounding areas. But much more evolved than that – the establishment of a trading station led to a flourishing wine industry, and later to the birth of a nation.
Jan van Riebeeck, the first governor of the Cape, planted a vineyard in 1655. On February 2, 1659, the first wine was made from Cape grapes.
The Wine Growing Areas:
The Cape wine growing areas are situated in the narrow viticultural zone of the southern hemisphere. The predominantly Mediterranean climate and the mountain slopes and valleys form the ideal habitat for the wine grape Vitis vinifera, the products of which have given pleasure to man (and woman!) for many centuries. Long, sun-drenched summers and mild, wet winters contribute to the ideal conditions for viticulture on the Cape.
The tasting will include:
4 diverse styles of the most widely planted grape in South Africa, Chenin Blanc.
4 unique examples of South Africa’s indigenous grape Pinotage.
